When I hear, "we are just following the rules", I call complete BS. For instance, there are no IRS rules that say you can buy a blood pressure cuff from Walgreens but not from Wal-Mart or Amazon, but that's what I was told by an Ameriflex representative.

He claimed one is a "medical facility", and the others aren't. Did they just make that up to suite themselves? I don't think it's just a case of "bad training". Why would you tell a customer this just out of ignorance?

Of course, the prices at Walgreens are up to 30% higher, and Ameriflex has its own store that they don't want Wal-Mart competing with - so that's possibly their actual motivation - to get you to buy things from their store, as well, of course, to keep you from spending your funds in as many ways as they can. Is that why they act like they don't know what an invoice or statement is, and have never seen one before, even though it would be enough documentation for the IRS?

In my experience, they won't accept co-payments at a doctor's office, even though IRS rules say they're allowed. They make an incomprehensible request for insurance company documentation that simply doesn't exist for copayments - a receipt with the medical facility name is not sufficient to them, even though it would be to the IRS. I gave up trying and paid my copayments out-of-pocket.

Is that their ultimate goal?

The only thing that appears to work is paying for prescriptions with their card at a pharmacy. But I would strongly caution against using them to help finance a medical procedure, which is unfortunate, because that is one of the best reasons to use an FSA account. I had the maximum put into the account to help with an anticipated dental implant procedure, but the dumb-as-nails CSR would not accept the detailed invoice or statement from the periodontist office. They acted like they didn't know what an invoice or a statement was.

It was obvious in talking with them that they didn't grasp basic concepts. Either Ameriflex intentionally hires dumb people, or they train them to act dumb. If that's the case, they are very good actors.

If I hadn't insisted they refer it to a supervisor, and got an honest/competent supervisor, I might have lost over $2,000. Folks, it's simply not worth the hassle and stress - and not worth the risk for the slight benefit you may be lucky enough to end up deriving from the tax deferral.

User's recommendation: Stay away - not worth the hassle and the personal economic risk.

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.

Location: El Paso, Texas
